My Background and Approach

Allison Jones, Social Worker - Psychotherapist

My greatest joy is helping people to overcome obstacles and view themselves in a new way. There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing someone’s healing and seeing people move toward the life they want. I am in awe every day of the strength and resilience of the human spirit it is my privilege to be invited to share in my clients’ story.

I have loved working with people since my first co-op in high school serving individuals with severe developmental disabilities. I learned at a young age that all people, regardless of background, experience, success or challenges, are worthy of love, respect, compassion and dignity. It is part my work at times, to help people to believe the same about themselves.

Throughout my career, I have trained and worked in a number of evidence-based modalities including cognitive, behavioural, dialectical, and psychodynamic models. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). My current practice draws heavily on the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model.

I have worked in various settings including acute care (general hospital/crisis services) and psychiatric inpatient units. I have worked in outpatient mental health and geriatric services. I have provided support doing individual and group therapy. My passion is individual work however my practice is expanding to include working with couples using the IFS model.

Over the past 5 years, I have specialized in trauma and complex trauma. Trauma covers experiences from a single incident, to repeated experiences over time. One important thing to remember about trauma is that it is not about the incident itself, but how the incident is processed that determines the traumatic response. Trauma is a normal response to a difficult situation it is not your fault, and we can heal it even many years later.

If you seek a trauma therapist, it is important to ensure that the therapist you choose is not only trauma informed but knows how to work with a person with trauma. Regardless of where you go for help, please be sure to find someone who is skilled and who you feel comfortable with. To this end, I invite you to contact me for a free 15-minute telephone call to see if we have a good fit.
